I am a huge fan of James Bond. He’s so suave, sophisticated and resourceful. I remember I emulated him so much growing up, in those Pierce Brosnan years… ah they were golden. I can’t remember what movie it was or if it was one featuring Pierce himself but, I saw a safe hidden behind an oil painting. Wow! How quaint I thought, my very own safe seemed a very distant reality, besides, what would I store? I’m sure candy and my Barbie dolls wouldn’t be attractive bait for professional burglars. But when I turned 21, I had cash, a checkbook, and enough information on a hard drive to make some people nervous. I decided I could no longer postpone the excitement of having one of my own, besides, I actually needed one, or so I thought.
Youngsters tend to be very impulsive, and while I won’t argue that my ‘’assets’’ indeed needed
protection, buying a safe was probably a little farfetched. Once I bought it, I was thrilled at first but after a while, the safe lock became such a hassle (for me, lazy as usual). I mean remembering the combination, going right or left, how many turns… it all seemed inconvenient… a drawer with a lock would have done the deal maybe.
But I do hold fond memories of that safe, I gave it away to a cousin who apparently had no issue with the safe lock and actually enjoyed the retro feeling that it had. Personally I was much more of a techy, so I went with a digital one, punch in a code and lo and behold, it opened! I store much more valuable things now, jewelry, bonds, and important documents. I think we all should protect important things, and if you (like my cousin) have no issue with the traditional safe lock, I highly encourage you to get one. They are much cheaper actually, and in all honesty, sometimes I do miss turning that safe lock left and right and once the combination actually clicked, that magical sound did have some powerful acoustic impact intrinsically attached to it. Next step, buy an oil painting and hide my safe behind it, now that will be cool!
